Caterpillar is planning a $725 million investment in Indiana.

The construction equipment manufacturer, which moved its headquarters from suburban Chicago to suburban Dallas two years ago, is expanding its Lafayette Large Engine Center with the largest capital investment since the facility opened in 1982.

The project is intended to increase Caterpillar's ability to manufacture new engines and aftermarket parts to keep up with rising demand. It will spend several years building a new building on the campus, bringing on new equipment, refurbishing existing equipment and expanding the campus' footprint.

The expansion will allow it to build and test new engines, aftermarket components and genset packages.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to further invest in our Lafayette Engine Center to continue to deliver for our customers,” said Bart Myers, Caterpillar senior vice president of large power systems, who has responsibility for the Lafayette campus. “We are grateful to the State of Indiana, the City of Lafayette and Tippecanoe County for their support as we make this investment to ensure adequate capacity while enhancing safety for our employees.”
