Bonnie Wortley passed away quietly on August 3, 2024, at The Cottage in the Meadow Hospice in Yakima, after a brief illness. Bonnie is survived by and was loved by her children: Mike Wortley (Starla), Sun Lakes, AZ; Steve Wortley (Debbie), Frances, WA; Pam Wortley Young (LD), Yakima; and Brian Wortley (Allyson), Sun Lakes, AZ. She was also beloved by numerous grandchildren (Alexis, Beth, Chris, Eric, Heather, Astrid, Adriana, Jack Daniel, and Josh) and great grandchildren.Bonnie's early years were primarily in Oregon, and in junior high school she moved with her parents, Lee and Irma Hesselgesser to Union Gap, Washington. At that time, she met her forever best friend and spouse, Jack Wortley, who would frequent Lee and Irma's lunch counter and grocery store. Bonnie and Jack attended Yakima High School together and married in June 1955.Over the years, Bonnie and Jack raised their four children in Washington, Oregon and California. Bonnie was a supportive spouse to Jack, who built a successful career in the Natural Gas industry. Both Jack and Bonnie were supportive of their kids in sports, hobbies, jobs, and raising children. They were particularly proud of their three sons' military service in the US Marine Corps and US Navy.Bonnie will be remembered for her skill as a seamstress, rose gardener and crafter. Jack will be remembered for his quiet life lessons to his children, his love of golf, and his fabulous pies. Bonnie may have assembled numerous hearty family dinners over the years; but she never made a pie-as that was Jack's area of expertise. They both loved dachshunds, and over the years, had numerous cat companions. In their mid 60's, Bonnie and Jack moved from Federal Way, Washington to Sun Lakes, Arizona for a well-deserved retirement, which often included breakfast out with family. In retirement, Jack enjoyed golf, attending baseball games, and participating in men's groups, including charitable fundraising for a kids' school supply fund. Bonnie enjoyed lunch out with her women friends, crafting (including painting), and sewing for her great grandkids and for local school kids. She was fun, and funny, and kind. And she definitely enjoyed a trip, even in her later years, to the fabric and craft store. In 2021, Jack passed away after a brief illness. At that time Bonnie moved to Washington to live with her son Steve and his wife, Debbie; and then to Yakima to live with her daughter Pam and her husband L.D. and son Eric. Over the past three years, Bonnie delighted in news about, and photos of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. She particularly enjoyed the company of, and visits with her granddaughter Heather and Heather's young daughters. Many thanks to all who cared for Bonnie the past several years. Special thanks to Pam, L.D. and Eric Young who shared their home with Bonnie this past year and provided her daily care and love. At the request of the family, there will be no services. Just have fond memories of Jack and Bonnie, who are now together forever in heaven.Services have been entrusted to Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory in Yakima, WA. <![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (4)

Mary Wakasugi-Chadwick (née Sato) of Yakima, Washington died peacefully on July 17, 2024, surrounded by generations of family. Yasuko Sato was born February 2, 1931 to Harry and Kaneyo Sato in f*ckushima, Japan. When she was 6-months old, her parents immigrated to the U.S., leaving her three (3) older siblings in the care of their paternal grandfather. They were not able to return to Japan once World War II began, and were eventually sent to the Minidoka Internment camp in Idaho. As many Japanese names were difficult for Americans to pronounce, Yasuko, like so many Japanese women of that period were simply called "Mary." Mary shared very few memories of her time in internment camp, but she remembers playing ping-pong and softball as a youth. After the war ended, Mary and her parents moved to Hazelton, Idaho before settling in Ontario, Oregon. By this time, Mary was in high school and she met her soon-to-be husband, Isam Wakasugi, in their youth group. They married January 14, 1950, when she was 19 years old; they went on to have six (6) children. The family farmed strawberries, sugar beets, onions and potatoes in Weiser, Idaho before relocating to Yakima in 1963 to establish a Farm Implement Business named after the three proprieters, Buege, Ogura, Wakasugi known as BOW Distributing. Mary became a widow in 1980. She kept busy with her adult children, their spouses and their children. Spending time at Grandma's House was always a treat and where all the best memories were made. Mary participated in a competitive bowling league for 30 years and she took ceramics classes at night. She began dating Benjamin Franklin Chadwick in 1993, both longtime members of Wiley Union Church, and they wed on June 18, 1994. Through this second marriage, Mary attained an even larger family with Ben's five (5) children and several grandchildren. They would travel the country visiting their widespread family, and both enjoyed watching Seahawks and Mariners games until their last days. Mary was widowed once more in July 2022.Mary is survived by her sons, Dale Wakasugi (Katie) and Sam Wakasugi, Jr. (Lisa), her daughter Sandy Harvey (Noel), her stepchildren Debbie Doebler (Gary), Benjamin Chadwick, Jr. (Trish), Cecelia Harrison, Stella Veach (Dave), and Edward Chadwick (Kirsten), numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her first husband Sam Wakasugi, her second husband, Benjamin Chadwick, her daughters Jody Hillier (Mike), Robin Dinsmore (Terry) and Linda Perry (Joe), her parents, and her siblings Masayo, George and Yukiko.Mary was the matriarch of a huge family, the last of her generation on many sides. She lived a long life with grace, quiet strength, resilience and exceptional character. She will be dearly missed by her entire family, who carry on her legacy. A private service was held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Wiley Union Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Wiley City Union Church (Women's Ministry).

Tina Dee Vasile passed away on July 11, 2024 at the age of 70 in Richland, WA. She was born on December 9, 1953 in Pomona, CA to Samuel (Buddy) and Bonnie Parriott and was one of nine siblings. She graduated from Bishop Amat Memorial High School in La Puente, CA in 1971. Shortly after, she and her ex-husband moved to Prosser, WA where she has lived for more than forty years and raised her three children. In 1987, Tina began her career at the Washington State University Experiment Station working as a technician and retiring after more than 30 years there.Tina met her longtime partner, Coy Ewalt, in 1990. They shared their love for riding horses and lived together on a 15 acre property close to town. Tina was able to barrel race in their personal arena and was a member of the Tri-City Barrel Racing Association and the Northwest Barrel Horse Association. She cherished many friendships that she formed over the years through work and barrel racing. Tina loved her family and was always doing something for them or with them. Her favorite pastimes included rafting the Ellensburg Canyon and of course riding horses. She passed her love for horses to her grandchildren. She taught them how to ride and even taught them how to barrel race. After Tina retired, she took her granddaughters, Jillian and Charlotte to many races across the Valley, Tri-Cities and Hermiston.Tina was a very light hearted, grounded, easy going, straight forward woman. Her strength and kindness were second to none. She never complained about her own pain or difficulties in life, not even throughout her lengthy battle with cancer. She taught us the value of hard work, laughter, authenticity and taking criticism with an open heart and mind. She was always more interested in hearing about whomever she was conversing with at the time rather than talk about herself and she was always ready to offer a kind word or a helping hand. Tina's positivity may have been her best trait of all. She was able to find something good in any situation. She was the rock that held our family together, and she instilled in us the courage to face challenges head on. Her strength was akin to that of a grizzly bear. She led a beautiful life; nurturing amazing children, grandchildren and friends. Her laughter illuminated any room, and her smiled warmed our hearts. While we will deeply miss her, her love will always be with us. In her own subtle way, Tina was a true hero in every sense of the word. She was a wonderful friend, terrific mother and an even better grandmother.Tina was preceded in death by her father, Samuel (Buddy) Parriott and mother Bonnie Parriott. She is survived by her longtime partner Coy Ewalt, children Shane Vasile (Kendy) of Kennewick, Dana Ortiz (Felix) of Tumwater, Vince Vasile of Prosser and Kay Ewalt (Tim Thorne) of Eugene, OR, her grandchildren who gave her special joy: Paul Sullivan, Joseph Sullivan, Jillian Vasile, Charlotte Sullivan, Trevan Vasile, Addison Vasile and Vincenzo Vasile and her eight siblings, Wendy Carey, Seri Bergold, Sam Parriott, Mike Parriott, Teresa Wilson, Letty Standish, Jeff Parriott and Frank Parriott who counted Tina among their most treasured people.Memorial services will be held September 21, 2024 from 1-4pm at the Desert Wind Winery at 2258 Wine Country Rd, Prosser, WA.

In Loving Memory of Robert D. Standfill.Robert D. Standfill, age 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Selah, WA, on Thursday, August 15, 2024, surrounded by the warmth and love of his cherished family. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew him - his devoted family, his steadfast friends, his caring neighbors, and his dedicated coworkers.Born on October 19, 1943, in Sweet Home, Oregon, Robert's life was a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. At a very young age, he left home and embarked on his journey that took him through several different states, jobs, and seasons in life. His journey was one of resilience and determination.Robert was a man of integrity and hard work. Always putting others needs above his own, his hard work and dedication were evident to everyone in his life. These qualities became the bedrock of his success as he partnered with a local businessman in 1980 to establish a manufacturing business, which grew to become the largest manufactured home sales company in eastern Washington.Robert had several hobbies he enjoyed, however it was a rare occurrence that he would take any time for himself. When he did get the opportunity to slow down a bit his hobbies included playing in a country band with his siblings when he was young, camping and fishing with his family and friends. As time went on it was driving his classic cars with his family, rolling the windows down and playing some classic country music was a core memory that will live in each of our hearts for years to come.Robert's life was not defined solely by his business achievements, but by the joy and laughter, he brought to those around him. His love for his family was boundless, and he was the guiding star for his children and grandchildren, always present in their lives. He took pride in their accomplishments, and there was rarely a day that passed without him reaching out to speak with at least one of them. His wisdom, insight, and love will echo through the generations, a lasting legacy of a life well-lived.He is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his children, Bob and (Lisa) Standfill of Selah, Tom Standfill of Yakima, Diane and (Garry) Neeves of Lakewood Ranch, FL; and his stepchildren, Tim and Sara. He also leaves behind his brothers, Gary and Reese Standfill, 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of his life.Robert's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Though he is no longer with us, the love, laughter, and guidance he provided will remain a part of our lives forever.A visitation for Robert will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home. When she was a teen the family moved to a new home in Yakima and she attended Central Catholic High School. At Yakima Valley Community College she met Stephen Smith and they were soon married at only 20 years old. She joined him on his family's wheat farm on the Horse Heaven Hills outside of Prosser. They were married for 60 years. She cooked all our meals from scratch and kept an immaculate home. She also prepared all the meals for the harvest crews and supported our dad, grandpa, brother and the extended Smith family as they worked the farm. She loved helping out with cherry harvest too. We had some good times in those orchards and fields.Once her children were grown she started working in visitor services at Columbia Crest Winery. She made many friends there and it was the perfect career for her as she got to showcase her many talents by decorating/merchandising the gift shop, talking with visitors, catering, and of course selling wine. Her biggest love in life was children. All the kids loved her. She really enjoyed getting to know all our high school friends and she became a second mom to many of them. She truly loved all her grandkids and nieces and nephews. She was especially blessed by the gift of adoption in her life. The incredible gift of life she experienced through her daughter, many nieces and nephews, and her grandchildren. She will forever be thankful to their birth families for that gift.Lillian was a very talented artist. She enjoyed several different mediums including watercolors, oils, pastels, ink, and charcoal. She also enjoyed arranging flowers, photography, decorating her home, sewing quilts, and many other crafts. Her other talent was sports. She was a naturally gifted athlete who enjoyed softball, tennis, volleyball and any type of competition.A special thank you to her forever friends in the Pinochle Club. A friendship group that grew closer over sixty as they experienced the highs and lows of life. They have always been a great support to our mom and dad. Robert Joseph Schneider, "Bob" to those who knew him, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Saturday evening, August 10, 2024. He was born on January 2, 1935, to Casper "Cap" and Virginia "Ginny" Schneider, in Union Gap.Upon graduating from Marquette High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Army, serving for two years. After his discharge, he enrolled in barber school. After graduating and getting his license, he spent almost 50 years cutting hair for thousands of people, young and old. He ran a very successful and respected barber shop on Tieton Drive and 49th Avenue. His wife, Roberta "Cile," also became a barber and spent over 36 years cutting hair by his side, at "Bob's Barber Shop."Both Bob and Cile were devout Catholics, and attended Holy Family, on Tieton Drive. They were both active in the church, him an usher, and her singing in the choir and teaching CCD.When their children were still young, they purchased a cabin at Rimrock Lake, up White Pass, in the Cascades. There, the kids grew up fishing, boating, and snowmobiling.Bob loved fishing and enjoyed smoking the fish. Eventually, he became very good at it. His customers from the barber shop would bring game and fish to have him smoke. Although he loved smoking fish, one of his favorites was smoking turkey, which made the holidays very tasty, indeed. Another hobby of his was raising New Zealand White Rabbits. He was involved in 4H and won many blue ribbons from his beautiful rabbits. He loved hiking and would often hike at Mt. Rainier, going from Paradise to Camp Muir. Eventually, he and his son climbed the mountain together, in the late 80's.He is survived by his younger sister, Emily Shellenburger, her two sons, and two grandchildren. <![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (20)

Robert Allen Royse, 91 of Yakima, Washington passed away in his home July 25, 2024, surrounded by his family. Bob was born August 17, 1932, to Loren and Melvina Royse of Walla Walla, Washington. He was raised and educated in Walla Walla where he worked part time in the local hardware store after school and on weekends.Bob graduated from Walla Walla High School (WA-HI) in the spring of 1950 and on January 5th, 1951, he joined the Unites States Air Force. Bob had to wait for a seat in his technical school after boot camp and was assigned KP duty for six months. He learned to prepare and serve hot meals for large groups of hungry Airmen and in the process learned how to cook a mean pot of beans. Bob was ultimately shipped to his school for aircraft mechanics and served out his tour of duty in Texas as a jet engine mechanic. Bob was promoted to Airman First Class and was honorably discharged on December 7, 1954, having been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.Bob didn't waste any time after his discharge from the service and was married to the former Florence Lane of Walla Walla, Washington. They were wed in Commerce Texas on January 9, 1954. They came home to Walla Walla immediately after their wedding. Shortly after his return to Washington, Bob started a new job in 1955 as a Chemical Technician at the Hanford Nuclear Plant, later being promoted to Senior Chemical Technologist. Bob moved with Florence and Steven to Richland, Washington and continued at the nuclear plant. Also during the time he lived in Richland, Bob adopted Steven, Florence's son from her first marriage, as his own son, and Steven's last name was changed to Royse. During their time living in Richland, they were blessed to add two daughters to the family, Darla in February 1956, and Laurie in April, 1961. In 1962 Bob was able to buy a house and moved the family to Yakima, where he would live out the next 62 years of his life. In March, 1967, Richard was born, completing the family. Bob would continue to work at the Nuclear Plant under several companies for another twenty-eight years before retiring in 1995, just six months short of a full forty years of service. During his time at the plant, Bob was exposed to a toxic spill of sodium fluoride that caused him serious respiratory problems and ultimately led to his early retirement. Bob would continue to have respiratory problems for the rest of his life.Bob was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Yakima. He taught youth groups, including his children, archery, and rifle marksmanship for many years. Bob and the whole family traveled to many conventions and competitions throughout the state, winning many honors. His archery group was called the "Short Shots." Richard was too little to take part in the Short Shots, so he was trained to shoot the bow in the back yard of the Yakima house, much to the chagrin of the neighbors. Bob and Florence bowled in many bowling leagues at the Eagles in Yakima. Bob, being very ambidextrous, switched from bowling left-handed to right handed after a shoulder injury and continued bowling for many years.Bob loved music and he was very gifted musically. He had the ability to simply hear a tune and play it "by ear". He never learned to read music but would simply play the instruments until he worked it out. He could play many instruments, but the guitar, mandolin, piano, and harmonica were his favorites, and when you heard him play and sing, you would never know that he had never taken a music lesson his whole life. Bob had many other interests like gardening, fishing, camping, bowling, and shooting pool at Ole's Tavern with a few cold ones. He also liked to tinker and was always fixing things, or repurposing things rather than throwing them away. He took on some huge projects too, like pouring a concrete patio and driveway, and completely rebuilding the garage. He loved cooking homemade soups with ingredients from his garden, and making Christmas breads with Florence to give to friends and family as gifts during the holidays. He also loved making people laugh. He could tell you a story or joke off the top of his head that would make you laugh until your face hurt.Robert is preceded in death by his parents Loren Royse and Melvina Brown, stepfather Henry Brown, brother, Leon Royse, his son Steven Lee Royse, his wife of 52 years, Florence I. Royse, and three grandchildren, Morgan, Bailey, and Brady Royse. He is survived by his two daughters, Darla Allen and Laurie Walker, both of Yakima, WA; his son, Richard (Christine) Royse of Orting, WA; Brother Michael Brown of Milton-Freewater, OR; Sister Patricia Heird of Walla Walla, WA; grandchildren Karrey (Tom) Allan of Naches, WA; Stephanie (Jarrod) Siebol of Moxee, WA; Tarina (Mario) Cardenas of Pasco, WA; Paul Luckett of Anchorage, AK; Isadore (Jennifer) Luckett of South Carolina; Loren Bryant of Phoenix, AZ; Ciera (Kevin) Walker of New Orleans, LA; Dominique Walker of New Orleans, LA; Jackson Royse of Orting, WA; thirteen great grandchildren, Mario, Ilecia, Amaya, Amir, Carter, Khalil, Steven, James, Troy, DeVonte, Tralonte, Tyrrell, and Aunaray. One great-great grandchild, Mateo Martinez; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the Yakima Regional Hospice team for all their love and support. Yakima Avenue, Yakima, WA, 98902. A memorial service with military honors will be held at the same location on August 9th at 2pm. He had enjoyed a lively family dinner and celebration for his 100th birthday.John Arthur Ries (Art Ries) was born October 17, 1923, in Toppenish, Washington, to John Arthur Ries, Sr, and Mabel L. Davidson. He spent his early years helping his family run their farm, with responsibilities that became increasingly significant as his father became incapacitated due to a hip problem.Art was a graduate of Washington State University in Pullman. While attending college, he worked for the college radio station, doing a daily agriculture report, the proceeds from which helped him pay for college. After graduating, Art travelled to Israel as part of an International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE). This cultural experience was pivotal for Art and influenced him for the rest of his life. After his return from Israel, Art became a county extension agent in Clark County, Idaho. During this time, he met the love of his life, Margaret Faust, at square dancing, and became her square-dancing partner, driving forty miles each way to pick her up and bring her home. Margaret was a graduate of the University of Idaho and worked as a school teacher. They married on October 2, 1955, in Idaho Falls, Idaho.Art and Margaret began their married life in Newport, Washington, where Art worked as a county extension agent, and later moved to Ephrata, Washington. Art went on to earn a master's degree. They started their family and had four children: Donna, Debbie, Allen, and Gerry, later moving their family to Selah, Washington in 1965.Their home in Selah was a hub of activity as their children grew; Art and Margaret led 4-H groups, and the kids played musical instruments and took part in sports such as swim team and track. Friends poured through the doors and often joined the family at the dinner table. Art and Margaret valued education and community involvement and built their busy lives around these values.Art was active in Barbershop singing and sang for the Valley of the Sun Chorus and various quartets for over fifty years. He and Margaret were members of Selah Heights Grange, and members of the Central Lutheran Church, where Art sang in the church choir. Art and Margaret brought their children up in the church, and the church was an anchor of their family life. For several decades, Art and Margaret opened their home to extended family for a yearly reunion on Labor Day weekend. This helped to keep the extended family close and in touch with each other.Art was a life-long learner and spent time on his computer writing newsletters, making spreadsheets, and following his grandchildren on social media well into his late nineties.Toward the end of his life, Art lived at the Terraces at Summitview and made good friends there with other residents and staff. Art was a good listener. He was also known to break out in song, serenading those around him. He was able to remember the lyrics from a multitude of songs. Art was a caring grandparent and a pillar in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Art's last great granddaughter was born 100 years after he was born.Art was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his siblings: Bonita (infant), Delvina, Tina, Edla, and Bill. <![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (25)

Dennis John Patrick was born on June 7, 1945, in Yakima, WA, to Virginia Grove. He passed away on August 2, 2024, in Yakima, WA, after a short illness.Dennis's early childhood was marked by frequent moves with his mother, stepfather John Heintzman, and younger brother Jody, as John sought work to support the family. John's strong work ethic left a lasting impression on Dennis, who would later instill the same values in his own children. The family lived in various towns, including Plains, MT; White Salmon; The Dalles; and Goldendale, before returning to Yakima when Dennis was around eleven. Raised Catholic, Dennis attended Catholic schools and became an altar server in the 5th grade. Upon returning to Yakima, he attended St. Joseph School and served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Church. In 8th grade, he was chosen to serve at High Mass and even served at masses led by the Bishop of the Yakima Diocese—a special honor that Dennis cherished.During his tumultuous early childhood, Dennis was often cared for by his maternal grandparents, George and Gene Champagne. Some of his happiest memories from his childhood were of their home on 8th Street in Yakima. He fondly recalled his grandpa's big backyard garden and rocking chair, and roaming the neighborhood with his lifelong best friend, Marvin. At the age of fourteen, Dennis moved in with his grandparents permanently, finding the stability and unconditional love he needed at that crucial time in his life. He often expressed gratitude for the influence of his grandparents and Marvin, believing they played a key role in shaping his future.Dennis attended Marquette High School, graduating in 1964. He then attended Seattle University for two years, where he joined the ROTC.In 1965, Dennis met Mary Buckley on a blind double date arranged by his friend Marvin, who was dating Mary's best friend at the time. Mary became the love of his life, and they were married at St. Paul's Cathedral on June 15, 1968. They remained devoted to each other for 56 years until his death. In his final years, Dennis exemplified the wedding vows he took, showing his children the meaning of "For Better, for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life."In 1967, with Mary's support, Dennis enlisted in the Army, anticipating the draft. He completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lewis (now JBLM) and attended a six-month Engineering Officer Training course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After their wedding, Dennis returned to Fort Belvoir for a two-week training session, bringing Mary along for their honeymoon. The couple later settled at Fort Lewis. Dennis was deployed to Vietnam in March 1969 and returned in January 1970. Upon his return, he enrolled at Central Washington College, where he earned a Business degree.Dennis and Mary started their life together, welcoming twin sons David and Aaron in 1976. Although surprised by twins, they were overjoyed. Dennis often said that Mary's mother, Grandma Lorain, was a Gift from God for her help with the mischievous "wrecking crew" when Mary returned to work. Their daughter, Anne-Marie, was born in 1979, completing their family. His children's childhoods were filled with memories of Dennis coaching their soccer teams, attending ballet recitals, driving the twins to karate, looking the other way when they brought home hamsters, ferrets, and dozens of parakeets, teaching all three kids to drive in the Holy Family parking lot, tinkering on cars with the twins in the garage, and creating new adventures in the never-ending bedtime tales of Toad Frog and Fairy Princess Annie. Many of those stories also featured his second favorite character, Fairy Princess Megan.Throughout his career, Dennis held various positions, but he found his calling in Human Resources, starting in 1983. He served as Human Resources Manager for the Ace Hardware Regional Distribution Center, the Yakima Herald-Republic, Michelsen Packaging Co., Yakima Resources (formerly Boise Cascade Mill), Floyd Blinsky Trucking, and D.R. Brown Trucking. In 2003, while at Michelsen Packaging, he was honored as the Yakima Valley Human Resource Association Member of the Year. Dennis retired in 2007 to care for Mary. His time at Yakima Resources was particularly meaningful, as his Grandpa George had worked at the Yakima Mill for over 50 years, and working there was a tribute to the man who raised him.In his later years, Dennis cared for Mary's aging parents and, after their passing, devoted himself to Mary as she faced the challenges of Alzheimer's. Diagnosed in 2018, Mary's condition eventually required professional care, but Dennis remained a constant presence, feeding her lunch and holding her hand during daily visits, until his health wouldn't allow him to drive.Dennis is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, David (Kristie), Aaron (Tammy and her daughter Shelby), and Anne-Marie (Andrew); and his grandson, Lincoln Holloway. He is also survived by his brother, Jody (Toni) Heintzman; Mary's two brothers and their wives; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Heintzman; his grandparents, George and Gene Champagne; his Uncle John "Buzz" Grove; and his in-laws, William and Lorain Buckley, who loved him as their own.Graveside services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Yakima on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 10am.

<![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (28)

Helen Osburn was born July 31, 1924 in Jennings, Kansas to Ella and Alva Swisher. Helen had one older sister, Delpha. When Helen was 10 years old, her parents auctioned off all their belongings and took the train to Clatskanie, Oregon where they lived on 40 acres of wooded land north of the main town. America's involvement in WW2 began in December, 1941, so Helen's parents moved to Bremerton to help with the war effort. Helen lived with her sister and brother-in-law Claire so she could graduate from Clatskanie High School the following June. After graduation she moved to Bremerton to be with her parents working at the Bremerton Navy Ship yard. Because she was not yet 18, they gave her a job of walking work orders from one department to another. Later when she did turn 18, she was given the job of typing up work orders. Due to an accident her dad experienced while on security duty, he was transported to the VA Hospital in Seattle for an extended recovery time from an amputation. When he had recovered, he returned to Bremerton. He began to take daily walks to the local grocery store and visit with the workers there. This proved to be a very positive occurrence for Helen. At the market he met a young man by the name of Garner, known as "Ozzie", who worked the produce stand. Helen's dad encouraged her to go up to the store and meet the produce man, who in time became her husband for close to 75 years. Six weeks after they met the two of them caught the bus to Yakima where they were married in the office of a local church. Ozzie got a job as a produce man at Grand Central Market, which was located where the present down town mall is. They lived in a small apartment in Terrace Heights across from where Terrace Heights Elementary is now. They did not have a car so they would walk into town or get a ride from someone. They attended baseball games at Parker Field and they both enjoyed bowling. In May of 1947, the first of their 3 children was born, Larry Osburn. Eleven months later in April their second child April Osburn/Thome was born. It would be another 5 years before their third child, Rebecca (Becky) Osburn/Meinzinger was born May of 1953.Over the years, they lived in Toppenish, Richland, and Moses Lake, but Yakima remained their main home. Larry and April graduated from Selah High School while the family lived on and apple orchard out on the Wenas Road. A few years later Ozzie and Helen owned a grocery store in Umatilla, Oregon. While there, their daughter Becky graduated from Umatilla High. The most life-changing event happened to Ozzie and Helen when they both accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior in 1972. At that time, they began to attend Tieton Drive Bible Chapel and to enjoy Bible study with their many friends. After retirement, Ozzie and Helen spent a number of years working at Emmanuel Mission for the Navajo in Arizona and volunteering at Cannon Beach Conference Center in Oregon. This was a rich and rewarding time for both of them. Afterward, they moved back to Yakima. In their later years, Ozzie and Helen lived at Living Care; then they moved to the Ponderosa where Ozzie fell and needed care to recover. He was sent to Crescent Health Care, but suffered a setback and passed away. Helen continued to live in the independent apartments but transferred to the Health Care facility when her own health needed additional assistance. She was well taken care of but as she gained years her health began to fail. She suffered a stroke on June 21, 2024 and from there it was less than two weeks before she passed away on July 3, 2024. It was a bitter-sweet moment because she had assured her family that she knew where she was going and was looking forward to her home in Heaven. Helen had a rich full life, especially after she began to walk with her Savior. She was survived by her three children, Larry, April and Becky, 5 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. The family is very appreciative of the wonderful care Mom received at Crescent Convalescent, especially Patty's attentive skill and personal touch with Mom. Hospice services provided perspective and comfort as Mom's homeward journey took place. We'll never forget. There will be a grave side service on July 26th at West Hills at 1:00.Shaw and Sons is in charge of arrangements. Psalms 73:23 Nevertheless I am continually with Thee; Thou hast held me by my right hand. Thou shall guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

<![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (38)

On paper, Susie Messer had one child and two grandchildren. In reality, she was a mother to so many others, and "Nana" to even more. Susan D. Cochran was, to her surprise, born in Nevada, Missouri (Vernon County) on September 19, 1946 to Floyd and Frances Cochran (nee LaGuire). In her early years, she made a deal with God that, if He'd get her out of Nevada, she promised never to go back. For the 77 years of her life, she upheld that promise to the point that she expressed displeasure when traveling through a corner of Missouri on her way to a new home in Kentucky. She didn't want the Almighty to think that she'd reneged on their agreement. After some moving around, living in Des Moines, Iowa for a short time and spending some time in Oregon, her family found themselves in Yakima, Washington. Yakima would remain her home for forty-odd years where she grew up, went to school, and raised just a little bit of hell. She often reminisced about wild high school weekends at Moses Lake, and it was there that she accidentally sank a Jeep. Fortunately, the beer cooler floated and they had refreshments on hand while waiting for her father. Floyd, known to almost everyone as Chub, owned Chub's 10th Avenue Service, a gas, towing, and service station located at 10th and Yakima Avenue. He arrived with his tow truck, recovered the Jeep, got it running, and stayed for a beer before eventually heading back to town. That's just one of the many stories I could tell you about her, though it's one of the few I'm allowed to share. In the closing months of 1974 she met Robert Messer and he fell head over heels for her. So much so that he proposed to her on the first date. Susie, not one to recklessly run into such a commitment, needed some time to think about it — which is why she didn't accept his proposal until the second date. Her family thought she was crazy, her friends likely thought the same. And yet, Bob and Susie remained married for almost 50 years. They were known in all of their communities as the couple who was always together. On the final day of August 1976, Susie gave birth to her son. There was some confusion surrounding the arrival because all pre-delivery evidence pointed to the upcoming birth of a girl, prompting the selection of the name Daniele Lorraine. Thinking quickly, the mother and father rearranged some letters and named the boy Daniel Loran Messer.During her life, Susie spent 26 years working in banks all over Yakima. She joked that, thanks to acquisitions and mergers in the banking industry during the 1980s and 1990s, she'd somehow worked for every bank in town. After two and a half decades of banking she realized that she didn't like it anymore and went looking for other things to do. She worked in fine jewelry for a while, but she found so much laughter and excitement from her days literally wheeling and dealing at used car lots. Susie sold everything from Volkswagens to Cadillacs. Her dad, a lifelong mechanic, would've loved the fact that she was working with cars. In the meantime, Susie and Bob took on the role of foster parents, inviting so many children into their home where they could give them love, structure, and help them get a start on the rest of their lives. It was around this time Susie and Bob transformed into Nana and Papa, something that was solidified a few years later by the arrival of her biological grandchildren and the surrogate grandchildren from family friends who were more family than friends. As they got older, Susie and Bob were everyone's grandparents. After over 40 years in Yakima, they followed their son to Arizona, where they lived for six years in San Tan Valley. When their son's family found work in south central Kentucky, Susie and Bob followed a few months later. Family was everything to her, and though Susie didn't like moving, she'd walk through fire for her family. So moving was merely an inconvenience and she always had her family beside her. She spent a few years in Russellville and then Alvaton, Kentucky where she lived at the edge of rurality. She delighted in the wildlife in the backyard, and she'd call her husband in to see the rabbits, deer, groundhogs, and turkeys moving around on the lawn and in the trees beyond. On July 22, 2024 we didn't just lose a mother and a beloved wife. We lost Nana, and so many other people lost their Nana too. We lost a woman who played piano, shot guns, drove sports cars, collected Japanese dolls, and she enjoyed good margaritas and cheap beer. She loved her friends and family more than anything else. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Max. She is survived by her husband Robert, son Daniel, Daniel's wife Catherine, two grandchildren, Iain and Raena, and a large host of others for whom she was a second mother or grandmother. While it's cliché to say that someone is "gone but never forgotten," I can't think of any better way to dedicate her memory.Susie didn't want a lavish funeral, only requesting that we play I'll Never Find Another You by The Seekers at whatever gathering we held. There will be a celebration of life in the early autumn, but for now, we ask that you play the song in her honor, and remember her with us.Her love traveled with us, and ours goes on to you.I could search the while world overUntil my life is throughBut I know I'll never find another you~The Seekers, 1965

Leon Anthony Maras, aged 70, of Selah, Washington, passed away at home, on August 7, 2024. Born on December 7, 1953, in Roslyn, Washington, to Joseph & Velma (Simon) Maras, Leon was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather known for his warmth, kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.Lee graduated from Cle Elum High School in 1972, excelling in football and basketball for the Warriors. "Leapin' Leon" proudly held the Kittitas County rebounding record for years. As legend has it, Leapin' Leon was rumored to have once kicked the net, and proudly displayed the scar on his forearm from grazing the rim. After high school, Lee worked as a Wildland Fire Fighter. He truly loved this time in his life. He knew the name of every type of tree and bragged about his vast knowledge of dendrology. On March 16, 1974, Lee married Sharon Hymas, the girl that gave his kindergarten graduation speech. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in special education (with great help from Sharon). He furthered his education with a master's degree in special education from the University of Oregon, and an Administrative Credential from Central Washington University. As a champion for children's rights, Lee firmly believed that every child deserved the opportunity to fulfill their potential. His dedication to this cause was recognized through numerous accolades, including the Yakima School District Crystal Apple Award and recognition as a Regional Distinguished Principal by the Elementary School Principal's Association of Washington.Lee's career in education spanned 41 years. He took his first teaching position in Sweet Home, Oregon. As soon as the superintendent showed him the salmon stacked up in the Santiam River, he was hooked! Lee worked as a Behavior Consultant for ESD 105, an Adjunct Professor for CWU, and Heritage University, in their educational department, before moving his family back home to Lake Cle Elum in 1987. He became the Principal of Walter Strom Middle School. He was also Principal of the high school, before moving to Yakima in 2002 to take on Davis High School. This became the highlight of his professional career. He loved the kids, the staff, and the community. A great success story was when he was brought into Adams Elementary School on a grant to improve student achievement. Scores significantly improved, and Adams became a model for the state to follow. Most of all, Lee loved the kids, no matter their ages or challenges. The harder the kid, the harder he loved.Outside of his professional achievements, Leon had a deep passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, berry and mushroom picking, and was an avid basketball fan. Lee was known for never missing a game and took immense joy in watching and following his children and grandchildren in their sports activities. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Maras; his daughters, Amber Maras (Billy) and Karissa Wilson (Tom); and his son, Seth Maras. Lee was also a proud grandfather to Spencer and Ashley Jolley, Jordyn Jolley, Camryn Birch, Peyton Birch, Londyn Maras, Jaxon Maras, and Bryton and Briar Wilson. See you soon, Dad...good fishing.Lee's legacy will be remembered through his contributions to education, his love for his family, and his zest for life's simple pleasures. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 10:00am at the LDS Stake Center (702 North 1st Street, Selah). Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at River Ridge Golf Course (295 Golf Course Road, Selah), from 12:00-2:30pm. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and remember Lee's life and the profound impact he had on those around him.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson's foundation in Leon's memory, reflecting his commitment to develop a cure or ease suffering. Memorial contributions may be sent in care of Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98935), who is caring for the family. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.brooksidefuneral.com.
